How to Study in Singapore
For International students who are seeking admission to the schools in Singapore, it important to have English skill since it is used as the common language n the country. Students have to take Admission Exercise for International Students (AEIS) tests. The knowledge on English as well as Mathematics syllabi is necessary. Therefore, students should prepare themselves for the test.
The admitted foreign students in mainstream schools should prepare themselves for the new environment. English is the language used for classroom instruction. Secondary 1: 12 to 14+

Permissible Age Range for Pre-University
Pre-University 1: 16 to 18+
Pre-University 2: 17 to 19+

It is important to make sure that the foreign students meet the age requirement according to the level they are looking the admission for. Students will be considered if they have sufficient time to prepare for the major exam towards the end of the year. Admission to a lower level can be considered if the students have insufficient time for the preparation. The school vacancy availability and the assessment of student’s ability level have also to be considered when seeking admission.
Based on the Immigration Regulations, a Students Pass/visa is required for foreigners who are going to study in a government/government-aided/independent school. If the foreigner is a holder of DP (Dependant’s Pass) or IEO (Immigration Exemption Order), a Student’s Pass is not necessary.
English competence is necessary since it is the main requirement in applying for a Student Pass. There are 3 certificates that are acceptable to demonstrate the student’s English skill:
- GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education)
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
By having one of those certificates, international students can apply for the Student’s Pass. A student can apply for a Student’s Pass to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) after receiving Letter of Acceptance.

It is required for overseas students to give their guardian’s particular to the school. A Singapore citizen or Permanent Resident above 21 or the parent of the student who is working in Singapore can be the guardian.
The guardian should be responsible for the international students who are studying in mainstream schools in Singapore. It is also important to note that the guardian should be contactable by the school. Reporting the change in guardianship to the school is required as well.
Primary Level Admission
For students from abroad who are admitted at the primary level, they are required to complete PSLE or Primary School Leaving Examination so that they can proceed to the secondary level.
Offering Mother Tongue as Part of the Curriculum
Offering mother tongue as part of curriculum is required since it is part of the educational system in Singapore. The exemption from the requirement can be considered after admission. The application needs to be done through the school principal. It will be referred to the Languages and Literature Branch, Ministry of Education ((MOE) to be considered.

Universities and Polythechnics
For international students who wish to pursue higher education, they can study in a polytechnic or university in Singapore. This country has three public universities:
- Nanyang Technological University
- National University of Singapore
- Singapore Management University (SMU)
These universities are very popular among those who are looking for high quality education with various majors to select. They are also among the best in the world. The entry requirements of the three public universities are:
- For undergraduate applicants, they must have at least 90% aggregate in marks.
- At least 2 years full-time work experience is required for Postgraduate applicants of management courses.
- Having a GMAT score of around 700.
- For non-management graduate applicants, they need to have excellent academic as well as non-academic records. A good GRE score is also necessary to be eligible for the course.
There are many private universities as well in which you will have many alternatives to choose. The top 5 private universities are:

There are 5 polytechnics in Singapore offering three-year diploma courses that can be considered:
- Nanyang Polytechnic,

To apply for admission to the courses of Polytechnics, there is the Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE) that is conducted every year. JPAE is organized by the five Polytechnics in Singapore. This will allow Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level certificate holders to apply for admission.
